16: Introducing Enterprise JavaBeans A stateful bean, on the other hand, is one that keeps track of information over a number of method calls For this bean, you can pass in information, request it back, perform operations, and so forth Each bean becomes customized for the particular client using it Given two stateful beans, a client is able to tell them apart A stateful bean might be used to represent a single user's shopping cart as he or she travels from product to product on your Web site Entity beans For each client, you need to have some idea of the data that that client is working on This is the job of the entity bean Entity beans represent some underlying data source be it a relational database, LDAP database, or some other system Typically an entity bean will represent one item of data.

For example, consider the list of all customers of the store For many purposes, an entity bean can be considered the Java abstraction of a particular element of the underlying data source, like a row in a table in a database Because entity beans represent a data source that will (probably!) last longer than the bean itself, they have the idea of persistence A persistent bean is one that, when users no longer need its services, will quietly write out its state to a data store and be removed from memory until the next time it is asked for Persistence allows beans to be managed according to memory requirements Large systems can have hundreds of entity beans, which would mean excessive amounts of memory usage if they were all to remain in memory at once.

When dealing with persistence, the J2EE environment allows two forms one for which the EJB server does the management, and one for which you do the management In the former case, the server will track the number of clients using a particular bean, the current memory requirements, and any other configurable factor, and then deal with the bean In the latter case, it is entirely up to you as the bean writer to decide when and how to write the bean's contained data to the underlying data store While the former is easier to deal with, the latter offers more customization options Cross Reference Persistence of entity beans is not covered in this chapter If you would like more information, please read 17..

ne of the best ways of getting to understand the people behind a given investment product is to analyze the results of their collective efforts the underlying investment portfolio After all, what better way of researching what an individual investment manager or investment team does than by studying the actual portfolio holdings The portfolio holdings will be the driving force behind the portfolio s future success or may be a harbinger of bad things to come In the initial RFI, we asked the investment manager for a sample portfolio We requested a simple list of the portfolio holdings as of the most recent month-end In addition, we asked for security identi ers (stock tickers in our example) and the actual names of the stocks held in the portfolio The last request is not necessary, but is often helpful when attempting to verify that a particular stock holding is correct.

The investment manager analyst has a number of viable options to choose from when conducting portfolio analysis On the commercial side, there are dozens of third party packages available Some of these packages work off of a main software package that is installed on your computer and updated either daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly Other third party packages are available 24/7 via the Internet Some of the more popular third party portfolio analysis packages are Barra, Wilshire, FactSet, Baseline, Reuters, North eld, Zephyr, and Bloomberg Another option would be to use whatever data source you have (FactSet, Bloomberg, Baseline, MSN, etc) and create your own portfolio analysis While I have always had third party software and databases available to me throughout my career, I have consistently used a combination of the third party software and portfolio analysis reports of my own creation.
